It's no secret that we are huge fans of The Honest Kitchen at the Ginger Sister residence. Ruby and Boca have been eating their dehydrated, human-grade recipes for breakfast for close to a year now. I feed a rotation diet and I think that quality and variety are important for nutrition and healthy appetites. I was excited to hear that The Honest Kitchen was introducing a new chicken formula, highlighting affordability and palatibility. Revel is their lowest priced whole-grain food, and it should please the pickiest pups.
I normally stick to grain-free kibble, but I rotate between whole-grain and grain-free recipes of The Honest Kitchen. The girls don't have any allergies or sensitivities that I'm aware of, so I'm completely fine with The Ginger Sisters having some "cereal" in the form of oats or barley for breakfast.
As with all of their products, Revel's ingredients are 100% human-grade:
Free-range chicken, organic barley, potatoes, organic flax, organic oats, green peas, carrots, bananas, parsley, organic kelp, celery, tricalcium phosphate, choline chloride, zinc amino acid chelate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, potassium iodide, potassium chloride, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, thiamine mononitrate
Ruby tends to be a bit picky about her meals, but my dad discovered that adding coconut oil to her breakfast guarantees a clean plate every time. I previously added coconut oil to their kibble in the evenings, but this one little switch has made such a difference for Ruby's appetite. Boca is happy to eat anything I put in her bowl (or that she finds on the ground, unfortunately!). Taste-wise, they do seem to prefer the whole-grain Honest Kitchen varieties, and I feed mainly Halcyon and Keen. I will definitely be adding Revel to their regular rotation!
As you can see, Ruby was sure to lick every last bit of Revel from her bowl! We're happy to offer you the chance to win a 4 lb box of Revel for your dog, and I'm also throwing in an awesome pair of Robusto bowls like the ones pictured. We won them from Kol's Note's Advent for Dogs giveaway and ended up being sent two sets. They are lightweight ceramic-lined aluminum, easy to clean, and best of all, the orange and white and red and cream are the Ginger Sisters' colors!

Disclaimer: I was provided a 2 lb box of The Honest Kitchen Revel chicken recipe in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own and I only publish reviews for products I feel comfortable using in the day to day life of my pets.
I add a little coconut oil a few times a week and I also cook up different proteins each week with veggies and put a little scoop in their food.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention we also do the occasional probiotic :)

I'm sure they love your home cooking!
DeleteAt the moment, my dogs' only supplement is fish oil. They LOVE it. They take their fish oil capsules like treats. One of mine, Coda, seems to take particular pleasure in popping the capsule with his back teeth so the fish juice sprays the inside of his mouth. It's so disgusting, but he loves it.
ReplyDeleteMine have never been on THK, although two of my three were on Sojos for a while.
I don't know what my dogs would think of fish oil capsules! They get coconut oil in the mornings, and I also add camelina oil or salmon oil to their kibble at night.
DeleteI wasn't able to get Ruby to eat the Sojo's food - I'm sure Boca would gobble it up!
I love The Honest Kitchen, but so far we've only tried their treats. Those bowls are beautiful, but unfortunately our crew needs slow feeder bowls....they all woof down their food otherwise!
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of rotating their diet, that's something I need to think about.

The Ginger Sisters eat out of slow bowls at night. Ruby is a slow eater as it is but Boca makes quick work of her meals. My elkhound (chow hound) was the worst - she would not even chew!
DeleteLooks like a great list of ingredients except I could do without the flax seed. Flax makes a lot of dogs itch and they can not use or digest it well. I will try it on my dogs that don't have grain issues. I love most of everything HK does. I think it is a great company
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that about flax seed!
DeleteI like the fact that the food is "human grade"! That is something to think about more often what with these scares with chicken jerky etc.!
ReplyDeleteMost definitely! I have heard of people trying THK food themselves but I am not that brave!
DeleteCoconut oil...what a great idea. Will it help reduce shedding? I bought some fish oil capsules to feed to the dogs, but not really sure how much they should receive, so have not given it consistently. Rotating the diet is a new idea to me also. I have one dog that is very prone to flatulence, so I tend to stick to one kind of kibble that seems to agree with her. Rotation sounds like a good idea if I can find the right foods. I'm sure they would enjoy the variety.
ReplyDeleteSome dogs are sensitive to food changes but my girls handle them with no problems. I am not sure if coconut oil reduces shedding - there is a long list of possible benefits, but Ruby and Boca both have nice, soft coats!
Deletei use coconut oil, eggs, omega 3 suppliments, apple cider vinegar, glucosamine....
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in trying apple cider vinegar for my girls.
DeleteKaiya's got a pretty robust GI tract, but I still try to feed her the good stuff and this definitely sounds like the good stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky that my girls do, too!
DeleteI love Honest Kitchen...all the pups like it too!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! We don't currently add supplements to the girls diets, although I am considering it! :D
ReplyDeleteEach day, our dogs each get a probiotic (Vetri-Mega), 1 tbsp pumpkin, 1 tbsp coconut oil and our agility competitor gets an herbal athletic supplement (from HerbSmith).
ReplyDeleteLucky dogs!
DeletePike loved this!
ReplyDeleteThat's a really cool product - I don't think I have ever seen anything like it! We have been wanting to try THK for a while so will definitely be entering!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
DeleteWe got a small sample of The Honest Kitchen at a pet expo and the pups LOVED it! I don't know why I haven't added it to their rotation yet. I need to get on that. I add salmon oil to their food to help with their skin/coat and entice them to eat a bit more :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they loved it! Ruby took a little convincing and Boca will eat anything. I know that some people use The Honest Kitchen as a topper instead of feeding it as a full meal.
DeleteI add organic green beans and raw pumpkin into Little Man Leonard's diet since he needs to shed a few pounds. I was also told recently to add coconut oil as well so I am on a hunt to find the best for LML that there is of course because that is what us parents do, do for the kids and forget yourself. My Leonard eats better food than I do. But it makes me light up and smile so huge to see how happy he is.
ReplyDeleteLittle Man Leonard sounds like a lucky boy! My Norwegian elkhound had to be on the green bean diet, too.
DeleteInteresting post, my humans don't add anything to my food but would love to try this! :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck, Spencer!
DeleteI've been adding glucosamine, fish oil and Plaque Off. Lately I've also been using coconut oil, he loves it!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to try The Honest Kitchen with Bain for a while now. I use coconut oil in his food as well, he loves it!
ReplyDeleteGood luck to the entrants! :)
Boomer and Dottie both get fish oil and glucosamine added to their breakfast and dinner. They love it!
ReplyDeleteWe don't add any supplements to our dog's food, but adding coconut oil sounds really interesting.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes supplement with fish oil or turmeric. Love THK!
ReplyDeleteMy dogs eat anything so don't need anything to encourage them to eat, but I do add a joint supplement since they are getting older.
ReplyDeleteWe sometimes add a probiotic and are just now looking into something for his joints.
ReplyDeleteWe don't add anything to Dexter's food
ReplyDeleteOur vet recommended a garlic additive to his food

I haven't added any supplements, but would love to know more about it.
ReplyDeleteI've only ever tried the tiny sample sizes of Honest Kitchen for my dogs. Not even a full meal. And it takes about a week, at least, before I know if a food is agreeing with my dogs and if they actually like it. I'd love to try a larger box.
ReplyDeleteThe 2 lb box is perfect for a trial. I've also stocked up on the little packets - they are great for travel! Thanks for stopping by and good luck in the giveaway!
